Prepare yourself

Chainsaw safety always begins before you even turn on a saw. Prepare yourself by selecting the right saw and reading the owner's operation manual entirely through.

Depending on your type of work, you have three sizes of chainsaw from which to select. Lightweight saws are for cutting small branches and felling small trees. Mid-weight chainsaws work well for regular use as well as felling small trees. Professionals use heavyweight chainsaws. If you are considering a saw for home use, a heavyweight saw should not be an option.

Once you have selected a chainsaw, you must wear the proper safety attire. Hard hats, hearing protection, safety goggles, gloves, close-fitting clothes, and steel-toed boots are recommended for chainsaw use.

Prepare your chainsaw

Maintaining your chainsaw ensures proper operation with each use. Make sure the teeth are sharpened well for quick, easy cutting. Check the chains tension and make sure the lubrication system functions well.

Always follow the advice of the manufacture when operating or making changes to your chainsaw. You should operate with good spark plugs, clean air filters, and a quality muffler.

Operating techniques

Always use both hands when starting and operating a chainsaw. You risk great danger when cutting a tree limb or log while using only one hand. The owner's manual will have other operating techniques for your particular model.

Storage

Always transport your chainsaw with the gas cap facing up in a level position. Secure the saw in the trunk or back of a truck. Having a chainsaw in the passenger area poses a great danger if in an accident.

You must drain the fuel system before storing your chainsaw. To remove any gas from the carburetor, run the engine after you have safely drained all of the gas in a ventilated area. This empties the saw of any leftover fuel.

Remove the chain and store it in oil. This will prevent rusting. Keep the entire saw in a dry place, out of the reach of children.

You may refer to your owner's manual for any other safety tips pertaining to your specific model. Remember to never operate a chainsaw while intoxicated. If you are having health issues, speak with your doctor before operating any heavy machinery.
